The very hot topic today is the rally held in Jena, Louisiana to protest the charges against the Jena 6. Demonstrators filled the streets of this small town in Louisiana to protest what they view as racial disparities in the justice system stemming from an incident in which a white teen was beaten by six african-american students. An argument over a tree resulted in three white students hanging three nooses from the tree, however these students were not prosecuted. An altercation later insued in which one of the white students was beaten and the six black students involved were initially charged with attempted murder, however the “victim” was knocked unconscious but was well enough to attend a school function later that evening.

As it seems happens to many young stars, Disney’s High School Musical star has been caught with her pants down, literally! The 18 year old star has apologized for some nude pics that found their way on to the Internet but were apparently meant only for her boyfriend and co-star, Zac Efron.

The Mega Millions Lottery jackpot failed to award it’s loot to a winner in last night’s drawing, making the jackpot soar to $250 million! None of the tickets sold for last night’s drawing matched all five numbers, but 12 winners were awarded $250,000.00 prizes.

Well, the news is in - Mattel has issued a recall of about 9 million toys that either contain a lead paint hazard or contain small magnets that can be swallowed. The recall includes millions of Polly Pocket sets and Batman action figures.

There are reports buzzing this morning about a possible second recall of toys with lead paint hazards. No official recall announcement has been made yet, but after the last recent major recall, Mattel is expectedly cautious. Rumor has it that this new recall involves a different Chinese manufacturer. The last recall involved Lee Der Industrial Co. in China’s Guangdong province. Mattel does not plan to continue using that contractor and China has begun an investigation into the company.

Attention all Parents!
Huge recall from Fisher-Price has been announced. Nearly a million toys are being recalled because of high levels of lead in the paint. Fisher Price / Mattel has notified the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the public of a recall involving Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer/Diago character toys. The toys involved in the recall were made in China and manufactured between April 19, 2007 and July 6, 2007.

The I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota collapsed during rush hour traffic last night. The bridge broke into sections and plunged down into the Mississippi River. Reports of 60 people injured and at least four dead have been changing as new information is brought forward during the recovery efforts. Twenty families are still waiting for word of their lost loved ones.

The hot topic this morning is an earthquake that hit northwestern Japan earlier today. The magnitute 6.8 Japanese earthquake has killed six and injured more than 700 people. The earthquake was centered about 155 miles northwest of Toyko in Niigata prefecture. Thousands of people have been evactuated and a small fire was reported at the world’s largest nuclear power plant in Niigata prefecture. Read a detailed report of the Japan earthquake here.
